Sorah Al-Balad ( The City )

Sorah Al-Balad ( The City ) - Verses Number 20

لَا أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا الْبَلَدِ ( 1 )

I swear by this city, Makkah -

وَأَنتَ حِلٌّ بِهَٰذَا الْبَلَدِ ( 2 )

And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city -

وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ ( 3 )

And [by] the father and that which was born [of him],

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ فِي كَبَدٍ ( 4 )

We have certainly created man into hardship.

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ ( 5 )

Does he think that never will anyone overcome him?

يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا ( 6 )

He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُ أَحَدٌ ( 7 )

Does he think that no one has seen him?

أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُ عَيْنَيْنِ ( 8 )

Have We not made for him two eyes?

وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ ( 9 )

And a tongue and two lips?

وَهَدَيْنَاهُ النَّجْدَيْنِ ( 10 )

And have shown him the two ways?

فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ ( 11 )

But he has not broken through the difficult pass.

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ ( 12 )

And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ ( 13 )

It is the freeing of a slave

أَوْ إِطْعَامٌ فِي يَوْمٍ ذِي مَسْغَبَةٍ ( 14 )

Or feeding on a day of severe hunger

يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ ( 15 )

An orphan of near relationship

أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ ( 16 )

Or a needy person in misery

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ ( 17 )

And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.

أُولَٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ ( 18 )

Those are the companions of the right.

وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ ( 19 )

But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left.

عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌ ( 20 )

Over them will be fire closed in.

The Difference between Advising and CondemningIn this classical treatise, Ibn Rajab (may Allah have mercy on him) discusses the differences between advising and condemning, which is an extremely important topic since it is very common that the two are confused for one another. For the most part, his talk revolves around the dealings and affairs of the scholars, and how it was from their way to advise and accept the truth from one another. And he shows how condemning was not from their characteristics, but rather from the signs of the evil and wicked people who held hidden goals and objectives.This book is especially important in these days due to the wide scale confusion that exists on this subject amongst the Muslims.
